A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)

“Fame is a four-letter word. What matters is what we do with it. ” – Fred Rogers

Number of Times Seen – 1 (24 Dec 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A reporter is sent to interview Fred Rogers for an article and doesn’t realize how much his life will change just by meeting this man.

My Take on it – This is a film that I have been interested in seeing for months ever since I heard that Tom Hanks was chosen to play the pivotal role of Mr. Rogers.

Hanks is superb in this role and brought me back to my childhood as I use to watch Mr. Rogers Neighborhood every afternoon as a kid.

The film is able to set up such an inspirational story that allows the viewer to get the feeling that the character of Mr. Rogers is speaking directly to him throughout the movie.

They allows us to see the simplistic way that Mr. Rogers viewed the world and that opens up so many ways for us to gain an understanding of the how and why he became such an important role model in the lives of millions of children over the years from his living room.

Hanks is able to bring this character to life and it’s quite uncanny how much he seems to be the real Mr. Rogers.

He has been extremely deserving of all of the awards and nominations that he has received for his work on this film and I truly hope that he will be able to also garner an Oscar nomination for his work here.

Unfortunately, he probably doesn’t stand much chance against Brad Pitt who is currently the front runner in the supporting actor category.

Matthew Rhys is also great here in the lead role of the reporter tasked with interviewing Mr. Rogers and he is able to hold his own against the astounding performance by Hanks.

This is a film that I plan t see at least a few more times because it was able to speak directly to me on a deep level about finding the important things in life and once you give off love to others, you will receive it back in kind from them.

One of the most powerful films of the year IMHO.

Bottom Line – An amazing film that is accentuated by the performance of Hanks as Rogers. The film sets up a great story and makes the viewer feel as if Mr. Rogers is talking directly to them throughout the film. We get a chance to see the simplistic way that Mr. Rogers viewed the world and allows us to gain a vast understanding of why he was such an important role model in the lives of millions. Hanks is superb in this role and manages to bring this character back to life in a way that is uncanny. He is quite deserving of all of the accolades that he has received so far and hopefully will get an Oscar nomination for his work in this role even if he probably wont be able to beat Pitt who is currently the front runner in the supporting actor category. Rhys is able to hold his own against Hanks and helps the stry feel even more genuine. This is a film that I plan to watch again because it spoke so deeply to me and I felt a personal touch by the characters in the way that the present the message about the important things in life are that you feel important and loved by those who are around you and love you. Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Days before the film premiered, ancestry confirmed Tom Hanks and Fred Rogers are actually sixth-cousins. (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10)
