Did They Get it Right? – Best Actress – Oscars 1933

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

Katharine Hepburn (Morning Glory)
May Robson (Lady for a Day)
Diana Wynyard (Cavalcade)

Biggest Snub:

Fay Wray – King Kong

My Overall Thoughts:

This was a strange year were there were only 3 nominees in this category and all three of them seem like quite a stretch in such a weak year.

My Rankings:

3. Diana Wynyard
2. May Robson
1. Katharine Hepburn

3. CavalcadeTerrible movie. One of the worst Best picture Winners.
2. Morning GloryHepburn is great in this film and shows how far an aspiring actress with talent will go in order to realize her dream. The story gets a bit dark at certain points but that helps hammer in the idea that sometimes, people do things that they shouldn’t in order to get ahead faster in life. The story does a nice job showing how the entertainment industry was 85 years ago and how unfortunately not much has changed over that time because certain aspects of things are still relevant so many years later. Hepburn was able to win her first (of 4) Oscars for her work in this film. Both Fairbanks and Menjou are also great in their roles because they show the various sides of the way executives can sometimes act within the industry.
1. Lady for a DayReally enjoyable film that highlights one of Capra’s favorite themes of down on their luck characters trying to make it during the Depression era. The facade works quite well and we get to see how they switch things around by showing the lower class characters being much more intelligent than the upper class ones. The dialogue is great and they manage to keep things both serious and slightly comedic at the same time since they are trying to show a social phenomena. Not Capra’s best, but still very entertaining to watch.

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – I guess so!  There were only 3 choices here and KH was the best f the trio even if she wasn’t perfect here.
