Number of Times Seen – 1 (25 Dec 2019)
Brief Synopsis – A group of exotic dancers develop a scheme to make money once their rich clients begin to taper off sue to the financial crisis.
My Take on it – This is a film that I had absolutely no desire to see but due to the fact that it has received some award season buzz for one of its performances, I decided to give it a try.
This is a pretty lackluster film that seems to try much too hard to emulate other films with similar themes yet fails to find its own voice and originality along the way.
The cast of this film is quite talented and I expected better things from them.
Jennifer Lopez has gotten lots of hype for her work here, but personally, I had trouble sympathizing with any of these characters and the situations they find themselves in.
This is meant to be a movie with a theme that should be cathartic and instead it just goes through the motions and seems too much like they borrowed parts from other films in the genre and created a kind of doppelganger of a story with similar themes.
This story is *inspired* by real events but they make thing feel much too sensationalized for its own good and that takes away so much from any kind of impact that this kind of story could conceivably generate.
The story itself has so much potential but the way that they present things takes away any possibility of this story being poignant which is quiet a shame.
Bottom Line – Lackluster film that tries too hard to emulate other films in the genre and just doesn’t pan out. The cast is quite talented but they don’t give any of them enough to really tackle this subject and instead of feeling cathartic, the story feels too much like a doppelganger of so many other films with similar themes. The story is *inspired* by real events, but the plot feels much to sensationalized for its own good. None of the characters feel sympathetic enough and that also hurts things from being more poignant which is a shame because the base of the story on the surface seems intriguing.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Jennifer Lopez personally brought Cardi B on board, saying that Cardi had been offered roles before, but she was looking for the right project. (From IMDB)
Rating – Razzie Worthy (4/10)
