Who We Are Now (2017)

“So obviously, its best for all of us if this goes as smoothly as possible.. less stress.” – Carl

Number of Times Seen – 1 (12 Jan 2020)

Brief Synopsis – In order to try and gain custody of her son, an ex-convict teams up with a young idealistic lawyer.

My Take on it – This is a film that I came across by occidental and was quite intrigued by the talented cast.

This film stars Julianna Nicholson in the lead role and she is great in showing how someone in her situation needs to act and react to everything going on around her especially while she is trying to straighten out her life.

She is helped along by a great supporting cast that includes Jimmy Smits, Lea Thompson, Emma Roberts, Zachary Quinto and Jason Biggs.

The performances and characters are all created in a way that the situations and dilemmas that they find themselves in come across as feeling quite realistic the whole way through.

Love the way that this film slowly allows the viewer to learn how each of these character got to where they currently are and what they need to do in order to attempt to break free from the feelings that they have that make them assume that they are trapped in this current situation.

The thing that slightly disappointed me about this film is that there is so much more potential for such a story and it doesn’t feel as if it is realized enough in order to make the message come across in a stronger and more poignant way.

Bottom Line – Interesting story that unfortunately isn’t as poignant and powerful as it could be. The performances are quite good and they make us believe these characters and the situations that they find themselves in. The characters are each developed quite well and we slowly begin to learn what brought them to the point that they have reached and what they must try and do to break free from the feeling that they are trapped in this particular never ending. This story has so much more potential and it’s too bad that they failed to find a way to make it even stronger in its message. Recommended!
