Number of Times Seen – 1 (22 Jan 2020)
Brief Synopsis – Based on the true story of a young lawyer who upon graduation decides to champion the cause of wrongfully accused death row inmates in the South.
My Take on it – This is a film that I heard lots of hype about a few months ago and was quite intrigued to see what it was all about.
The story is told in a very engaging way and the fact that it’s based on a real life incident adds much to it’s punch.
The problem here is that these kind of stories have been told quite often on film and this film fails to really give us something more unique in the way it presents things in order to help it feel fresh and original the whole way through.
The cats of this film is great and both Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx do great jobs with these characters.
Love the way that they don’t shy away from telling things as they are meant to be and it never feels as if the narrative is being sugarcoated especially in the instances when the characters are being harassed by the law as they try to prove that a grave injustice has been carried out.
They present the story really well and allow us to get a very clear picture of how seemingly outside factors can affect the decision making process that should be straightforward when dealing with the well oiled law and order machine.
The film is slightly too long and there are scenes that probably should have been edited better in order to make them tighter and more powerful.
Bottom Line – Engaging story that works really well despite the fact that it never feels unique enough in its storytelling. The cast is great and both Jordan and Foxx are great in these roles. The film doesn’t sugarcoat the way that these characters are harassed as they try to prove that an injustice has been carried out. Really like the way that things are presented as they allow us to get a clear idea of how much outside factors can sometimes be involved in decision making processes within law and order. The film is a bit too long for its own good and that also hurts things because there are scenes that could have been much tighter than they are. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The roadblock scene was not intended to be a night scene. The film crew was delayed for almost 4 hours due to storms and it pushed the filming back to nighttime. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
