Cats (2019)

“Come. We’re about to begin.” – Old Deuteronomy

Number of Times Seen – 1 (27 Jan 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A band of cats must choose each year one of their own to be reborn.

My Take on it – This is a film that has been hyped for decades and has finally made the transition from stage to screen.

Unfortunately, that isn’t a very big accomplishment because it is a horrendous film.

The look and feel of this film is completely off and fails to be enjoyable in any way, shape or form.

I have never seen the stage play, but the fact that it was the longest running play of all time at one point means that there is some reason that people are drawn to this story.

This film sports a very talented cast who are completely wasted here sine none of them stand out among the rest.

The story and plot of this film is quite banal and boring and fails to find a way to be captivating to the audience or make us care about any of the characters or what will happen to them.

The only saving grace of this film are the songs which have become so iconic over the decades that it would be very difficult for them to completely be ruined too.

Thankfully, if one wishes the listen to the songs there is absolutely no need to actually watch this terrible film and one can save their money to buy the soundtrack to listen to some of these memorable songs without the need to endure watching this turkey of a film which is a complete waste of time.

Bottom Line – Terrible film that looks and feels so wrong the whole way through.  Very talented cast is completely wasted here. The story isn’t very interesting and the way that they chose to utilize the special effects hurts thing more than helps because it just doesn’t work at all. The one thing that is enjoyable here are the songs which have become so iconic over the decades.  The catch is that one doesn’t need to watch this film in order to hear the songs, so buy the soundtrack instead and save your money from having to endure watching this film.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Trailers for this movie received far more dislikes than likes on YouTube primarily due to the cats’ awkward part-human, part-CGI appearances, and how seriously they were played off. One reviewer on entertainment site Nerdist News said they felt the teaser trailer was more terrifying than the trailer for It Chapter Two (2019), which was released around the same time. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (2/10)
