Edge of Tomorrow (2014) – Encore Review

Brief Synopsis – In the near future, an Army officer who works in Public Relations must find the correct path to defeating the enemy as he must relive the same day again and again.

My Take on it – This is a film that is able to take a great premise and integrate it into a taunt sci-fi story quite well.

The story is in some ways cyclical, yet they find some very innovative and creative ways to keep things feeling fresh and inventive throughout.

Tom Cruise works really well in the lead role and makes his character quite believable throughout.

He is helped along by Emily Blunt who plays a character very different from what she usually has done and she shines in it.

The story itself may be “looped” but things still don’t feel repetitive at all as things move along because it adds more and more to the plot and out knowledge of everything going on.

This film is able to take the “Groundhog Day” effect and utilizes it to the fullest by keeping things so enjoyable throughout.

This film’s story is done really well as things move along at a great and sometimes unexpected pace.

Due to the way the story is played out, they are able to explore so many possibilities for these characters and their eventual path which helps make things even more entertaining to watch unfold.

In some ways this movie feels like it is in a maze which forces the user to start from the beginning every time that they hit a wall along the way and that works so perfectly here.

Bottom Line – Great action film that manages to integrate sci-fi into the story line so well. Cruise is perfect in the lead role and has great on and off chemistry with Blunt. The story is “looped” yet they find some very innovative and inventive ways to keep things feeling fresh and original the whole way through. They utilize the “Groundhog Day” effect really well throughout. The story plays out really well and I love the way that they are able to explore so many avenue along the way because it feels like trying to get out of a maze where you must always start from the same point before moving to the next stage. Recommended!
