One Child Nation (2019)

“I was born in China in 1985, a time when China’s population crisis was making headlines around the world.” – Nanfu Wang

Number of Times Seen – 1 (3 Feb 2020)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary that tries to get a better understanding of the Chinese National Policy that only allowed one child per family.

My Take on it – This is a film that I had heard so many great things about and was curious to see what it was all about.

They are able to give us a very in depth look at the One Child Policy in China and also show how this law affected people in the years since.

The film has interviews with mid-wives, politicians, and commoners who found ways to either avert or flee this kind of policy, sometimes at great costs.

They are able to give us a very candid look at how and why this policy was enacted and what were the reasons that led to it being stopped also.

The story is told form a very personal perspective which adds so much more insight into things and helps make the story even more powerful and poignant in all that it shows.

Love the way that this film also deals with the Chinese adoption system in America and how many of the truths that people were told were actually false.

The various ripple effects of this policy is still felt in the present as people struggle with what they were forced to do years ago and some of them still have trouble coming to terms with what they needed to do for the love of their country and its policies.

Bottom Line – Interesting and in depth look at the One Child Policy that was in effect in China for so many years and how this policy has affected the people ever since. This film shows a very candid look at how the policy was enacted and the many reasons why the people went along with this law. This movie is able to dissect the policy and try and explain the many factors that led to it being implemented and by the same merit why it was eventually stopped. Told from a very personal perspective which helps make things even more impactful and powerful. Recommended!
