American Flyers (1985)

“How can you be sick? You have a mustache. ” – David

Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Feb 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A sports doctor convinces his brother to join him on an extreme cycling race across the Rocky Mountains.

My Take on it – This is a film that I recall hearing about when it was on cable back in the 80’s yet never had the inclination to see what it was about.

The premise itself sound much more promising than it truly is.

The fact that it stars Kevin Costner made me decide to finally check it out.

Unfortunately, even with his participation here, things don’t become any more interesting.

The characters aren’t developed well enough and that makes it quite hard to sympathize with their various plights along the way.

This also make it really hard to care about what will happen to any of them or what kind of decisions they will make along the way.

The only worthwhile part of this film is watching the racing scenes but they still lack the right kind of suspense that would make things even more enjoyable to watch.

The story is filled with lots of plot holes and they detract so much from the way that we are meant to believe everything that is going on.

Bottom Line – Really strange and boring film that seems like it should be much more interesting than it truly is. Even having Costner is a lead role doesn’t help make things more interesting to watch. The racing scenes are enjoyable even if they mostly lack any kind of real suspense. The film’s story has way too many plot holes that hurt things because they detract so much from the realism of the story itself. The characters aren’t developed well enough and it’s so hard to care about any of them or about anything that they may do along the way.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When the cyclists are racing at “Monumental National Park” (actually Colorado National Monument, west of Grand Junction, Colorado) one of the cyclists (an extra) falls off and goes over the edge. He actually went over a drop off that was about 1,000 feet, and was only saved from major injuries when a small tree snagged his bike. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (4/10)
