The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.
This month’s genre has been chosen by Bubbawheat of Flights, Tights, and Movie Nights and we will be reviewing our favorite Animated Comic Book/Strip Movies.
Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Feb by sending them to firstname.lastname@example.org
Try to think out of the box! Great choice Bubbawheat!
Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Animated Comic Book/Strip Movies..…
Number of Times Seen – 1 (11 Feb 2020)
Brief Synopsis – A warrior princess chooses to lead an army against a marauding force led by her sister.
My Take on it – I decided that in order to make my guest choices of the Genre for the Genre Grandeur series more personal (and expand my own personal horizons of these genres), I will take a recommendation from my guest for a film to watch for this Genre Guesstimation series.
This movie was Bubbawheat’s choice for me to watch.
I was familiar with the character of Red Sonja before watching this and hoped that this film would e able to do her character justice.
Unfortunately, the way that they chose to present things hurts the story too much.
This film is done in motion comic animation which makes things look like it’s a moving comic book story.
This unfortunately doesn’t work well at all and takes so much away from this story which has much more potential due to its epic nature.
It’s quite sad tho that neither this film nor the previous live action version of her story which costarred Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bridgett Nielsen as the warrior princess were able to find a way to make this potentially enjoyably story any more interesting.
This was not an easy film to get through, but thankfully it was relatively short. (Sorry Bubbawheat… I tried…)
Bottom Line – Interesting idea that comes across horribly due to the way that things are presented. The character and background of Red Sonja is a great one but this film (nor the live action one) does her much justice. The choice to have this film in an animated motion comic aspect takes so much away from the kind of powerful storyline that they are trying to present here which is quite unfortunate.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The film is a reboot of Red Sonja (1985). (From IMDB)
Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not at all. The motion comic aspect of this film takes so much away from being able to enjoy it more.
Rating – Razzie Worthy (2/10)
