Hellboy (2004)

“My uncle used to say that we like people for their qualities but we love them for their defects.” – John Myers

Number of Times Seen – Twice (18 Apr 2005 and 12 Feb 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A creature from a parallel world is brought up by a scientist in order to help fight dark supernatural elements on Earth.

My Take on it – This is such a fun adaptation of this comic book, its characters and the word it inhabits.

The character of Hellboy is great and this film shows why he is loved by so many.

This is largely due to his no nonsense attitude and kick-ass mentality.

Ron Perlman is superb in the title role and is able to bring this character to life on the screen quirks and all.

The film utilizes it’s special effects really well and they find a way to make this parallel Earth feel real and plausible throughout.

Te film does a great job developing the various characters and we get a clear idea of who each of them are and what they want to do.

Guillermo Del Toro is an amazing storyteller and he finds a way to do wonders with this story line by making things really suspenseful and thrilling the entire time.

This film is clearly the very best of the films in the series.

Bottom Line – Great adaptation of this comic book character and the world he is part of.  Perlman is superb in the title role and helps bring this character to life, quirks and all. The special effects are done really well and help make this doppelganger Earth feel so realistic and plausible throughout. The characters are developed well so that we are able to get a clear picture of who they are and what they want to do here. Del Toro is a masterful storyteller and is able to do wonders with this story by making things so suspenseful and thrilling the whole way through. Clearly the best film in the series. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Upon meeting to discuss the movie, Hellboy creator and co-executive producer Mike Mignola and writer/director Guillermo del Toro decided to reveal to each other their choice for the lead role of Hellboy. They both said at the same time, Ron Perlman. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
