Number of Times Seen – Twice (9 Feb 2009 and 12 Feb 2020)
Brief Synopsis – Mythical creatures travel to Earth in order to take it over and only Hellboy and his team can try and stop them.
My Take on it – This is a film that takes the concept of the first movie in the series and expands on it.
They find some interesting ways to continue the story of the characters since there is little need to develop them from scratch.
Guillermo Del Toro once again is able to show how great a story teller he can be and he helps make these character so enjoyable to watch a second time.
The overall story in this film is a bit weaker than the one on the original and that does end up hurting things a bit.
Ron Perlman is back in the title role and is able to once again prove why he was literally born to play this role.
The special effects utilized here work really well in allowing the story to feel even more realistic in all that it does.
The movie is able to expand a bit on the backstories of the characters and that is also nice to see.
Unfortunately, there are a few scenes that are a bit too slow and these lulls hurt the overall pacing of things too much.
Not all of the scenes are engaging enough and that is quite a shame because this film has a lot more potential than is realized.
Regardless, they still find a way to keep things quite entertaining most of the time and it’s fun watching the story unfold.
Bottom Line – Interesting way to continue the story of these characters. Del Toro once again does things so well and he makes these characters so enjoyable to watch. The story in this film is a bit weaker than the previous one and that hurts things slightly. Perlman is back as Hellboy and once again shows how much he was born to play this role. The special effects are great and allow for the story to feel a bit more realistic along the way. They do a fine job adding to the backstory that we already know about these characters, but the story has too many lulls along the way and doesn’t manage to keep things engaging throughout which is a shame, but still manages to stay entertaining enough. Recommended!
