Genre Guesstimation – Doctor Strange (2007)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by Bubbawheat of Flights, Tights, and Movie Nights and we will be reviewing our favorite Animated Comic Book/Strip Movies.

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Feb by sending them to animatedbubbawheat@movierob.net

Try to think out of the box! Great choice Bubbawheat!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Animated Comic Book/Strip Movies..

“You can only heal the wounds of the flesh once you have healed the wounds of the soul.” – Ancient One

Number of Times Seen – 1 (23 Feb 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A skilled surgeon is injured in a car accident and must find a way to overcome his new handicap by any means which leads him to learn about a parallel world of sorcery.

My Take on it – This is a film that I was quite intrigued to see since I’m a fan of the character Doctor Strange.

This origin story does a great job explaining everything that he needed to get through in order to follow his destiny and become a sorcerer savior of Earth.

the story is played out really well and allows for us to get a clear grasp of the various motivations of the different characters as things progress.

What’s quite unfortunate here is the fact that the MCU’s version of the origin of this character that is shown in Doctor Strange (2016) is much better and that takes away so much from this story when one places them side by side.

Since it is nearly impossible to separate the events of these two films, since this in the inferior of the two, it obviously hurts the way one might perceive this one which is quite a shame.

The action is done well here and obviously the use of animation allows for some very intense effects that wouldn’t work as well in a live action film even with CGI technology.

Bottom Line – Nice origin story of Doctor Strange that lets us get a clear idea of what he needed to go through in order to fulfill his destiny of becoming a savior of Earth. The story plays out quite well and allows us to understand the motivations of the characters along the way. Unfortunately for this film, the MCU origin film of this character Doctor Strange (2016) does a much better job relaying this story. That’s quite a shame because it makes it so much more difficult to try and differentiate between the two and this film’s perspective is hurt by that.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In the hospital, Dr. Donald Blake is called down to the E.R. and a blonde doctor with a cane appears. Donald Blake was the human identity of the superhero and Norse god Thor. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not quite. Once again, the way that the MCU created this origin story works so much better and it’s quite hard to watch this without considering that film at all.

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
