The Hunt (2020)

“Depends on whether they’re smart pretending to be idiots or idiots pretending to be smart.” – Crystal

Number of Times Seen – 1 (22 Mar 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A group of strangers find themselves in a unknown place where they are being hunted for sport.

My Take on it – This is a film that I only heard about due to the circumstances as to how it became available to watch due to the new reality that we are all living in.

It’s a modern adaptation of the premise of A Most Dangerous Game and they modernize the idea quite well.

The story starts off right away at a fast pace and continues that kind of pacing throughout.

Really enjoyed the way that they chose to focus on numerous characters at the start before focusing on the main character.

This raises the level of suspense because we never know who are the characters that we should try to care about and that works quite well in raising the tension level.

The film has some great twists and turns along the way that help the story play out in an enjoyable way and that helps keep things interesting.

The story is shown from various perspectives and that helps allow the viewer to see how things play out from numerous viewpoints even though some of them are quite skewed in their outlook on things.

The biggest problem with this film tho is the lack of development with any of the characters since that makes it extremely hard to care about any of them or about what will happen along the way and that in turn doesn’t leave anyone for us to really root for as things play out.

Bottom Line – Really fun modern adaptation of The Most Dangerous Game.  Love the way that the story starts off in a very fast way and things move at such a great pace. The choice to focus on various characters before revealing who is the main character works really well and adds much to the suspense. The story plays out especially well with the various twists and turns along the way that help raise the level of tension. They do a nice job showing the story from various perspectives which helps make us see the different sides of the story despite some of the skewed logic involved in all that is going on.  Unfortunately, none of the characters are developed well enough and they all come across quite superficially so it’s quite hard to care about what will happen to any of them which is a bit problematic especially when there is a natural urge to want to root for someone.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The movie was yanked from its original release date due to mass shootings then rescheduled for March 13th, 2020 to then be affected drastically at the box office by the global COVID-19 pandemic. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
