Underwater (2020)

“What’s the scariest part of a roller coaster? Waiting in line.” – Paul

Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Apr 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A group of deep water explorers in a submerged station need to find a way to the surface when things start going wrong due to unknown reasons.

My Take on it – This is a film that I was curious to see because of its cast especially Kristen Stewart who is the lead.

Unfortunately this is a horrendous movie that tries much too hard to feel like a doppelganger of a child of Aliens (1986) and The Abyss (1989).

To my disappointment, this doesn’t even come anywhere close to being thrilling or as intense as either of those James Cameron films.

They do have a talented cast here but they are all completely wasted here because the plot is silly and things are so incredibly boring from start to finish.

They attempt to make this a horror film yet the creature isn’t at all scary and in some shots looks like it was created by a little kid.

The story is almost non-existent and the choice to forego on any kind of character development hurts things far too much here.

The dialogue is also quite silly and laughable and nothing presented here gives the audience a reason to want to care about the characters or about what will happen to them at all.

Bottom Line – Tries much too hard to be a cross between Aliens (1986) and The Abyss (1989) and doesn’t come even close to being as thrilling as either of them. The cast is quite talented yet they are wasted in this really boring film where nothing of importance happens at all.  The film wants to be a horror movie but the creature isn’t scary enough and seems like he was put together by a kid. The story is almost non-existent and the lack of character development also hurts this film far too much.  The dialogue is pretty silly and also doesn’t give the audience any reason to care about the characters or the situations.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Due to the Disney purchase of 20th Century Fox, the release date was pushed to January 2020. Shooting took place in the spring of 2017. By the time it was released, almost three years passed. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (2/10)
