Fantasy Island (2020)

“The problem with having it all is that usually someone else wants it too.” – Mr. Roarke

Number of Times Seen – 1 (17 Apr 2020)

Brief Synopsis – After winning a lottery, a small group of people travel to a magical island where their deepest fantasy can become reality.

My Take on it – This is a film that I wasn’t quite sure if I wanted to see because of my love for the original TV show that I recall watching as a teen in the 80’s.

They actually do a nice job adapting the story for a modern audience because it comes across quite well.

The choice to make things follow a more horror/thriller genre is done in a sound fashion even if ultimately certain aspects of the story feel slightly incomplete.

The cast is pretty god and they manage to give us a fun ensemble even if none of them seem to stand out among the rest.

Michael Pena is fine on the lead role of M. Rourke, but he pales in comparison to what Ricardo Montalban did in the 7 year run of the TV show.

The pacing of the story is pretty good even if things end up moving into strange territory before they find a way to make things more coherent which is a bit too much.

The film has some plot threads that remain unhinged and unexplained and this causes far too many unanswered questions to arise along the way.

Bottom Line – Great way to update this premise for a modern audience. The decision to switch the genre works well even if certain parts of the story feel a bit incomplete.  Great ensemble cast even if one of them really stand out. Pena is fine in the role of Rourke even if he doesn’t come close to Montalban in the role. The story moves along at a nice pace but the story moves in some strange directions before they find a way to try and make things seem a bit more understandable which is a slight problem.  There are a few plot threads in the story that are left unhinged and unexplained and these kind of holes in the plot can cause too many questions to arise which is a shame.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Both Michael Peña (Roarke) & Michael Rooker (Damon) have both played roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU): Pena in Ant-Man (2015) & Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018); Rooker in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) & Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017). (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
