The Tao of Steve (2000)

“Look at me. Look at me, okay? Technically, I shouldn’t be getting laid, but I do. And do you know why, Dave? Because when I’m hanging out with a woman, that’s all I’m doing is hanging out, talking, listening. I’m not sitting there thinking about how to get in bed with her. And this completely confuses them because they’re saying “Wait a minute. I’m so much better looking than this guy. Isn’t he attracted to me?” The basic principle: We pursue that which retreats from us. ” – Dex

Number of Times Seen – Twice (24 Feb 2003 and 20 Apr 2020)

Brief Synopsis – An overweight womanizer who uses his own method of Zen in picking up women finally meets his match.

My Take on it – This is a very unique film that tries to show us how important tactics and personality can be in picking up women no matter what you might look like on the outside.

They find a way to keep this story so much fun to watch despite the predictability of most films within this genre.

The performance by Donal Logue helps make things more intriguing to watch because he gives us a very unique kind if character to care about.

The main character is developed quite well and despite the absurdity of some of his action in the film, both the character and the situations actually seem more plausible due to the way they present things.

This is a typical rom-com in the way that the plot moves along, yet the do somehow find a way to make it stick out slightly from other films in the genre due to its quirkiness throughout.

Bottom Line – Really fun film that works so well due to the performance of Logue. The character is developed really well and they find ways to make the character and his methods seem much more plausible. The story moves in a typical rom-com fashion, but the fact that they still find ways to make this stick out from other films in the genre helps make it so fascinating to watch unfold.  Recommended!
