Lost in Space (1998)

“There’s a lot of space out there to get lost in.” – John Robinson

Number of Times Seen – At least 3 times (Theater in ’98, video and 4 May 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A crew on a spaceship, that consists mostly of a family, set off for a far away system go off course and end up trying to find their way back home.

My Take on it – This is a film based on the 60’s Sci-Fi TV show.

I recall hen this came out and how excited everyone was to see an updated version with modern day effects.

Unfortunately, the story itself is pretty weak and they truly squandered so much potential with this film.

This movie had the potential to be a blockbuster franchise, but the convoluted plot ruins everything.

The final act also introduces extraneous elements to the mix which further send this into an uncontrollable spin.

The film has an amazing cast led by William Hurt, Mimi Rogers, Heather Graham, Joey Tribbiano… I mean Matt LeBlanc (who is obviously better in a comedic role than as an action star), Lacey Chabert and Gary Oldman.

They could have done so much with this talent, yet fail to make things more intriguing and engaging.

The special effects are done really well and they are able to enhance things a bit, even though this plot doesn’t really deserve the help it gets.

The chameleon monkey Blawp is quite cool and steals the show here.

Bottom Line – Such wasted potential. This film could have been amazing but they give it a convoluted plot that gets even more confusing when they add extraneous elements to the final act. The cast is superb and they could have done so much with this premise, yet squander it so miserably. The special effects are wondrous and enhance things more than they should. Love the chameleon monkey Blawp who is able to steal every scene he appears in.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Despite opening in theaters on April 3, this was the first new film of 1998 to open at #1 at the box office. Titanic (1997) had been at the top spot for the previous 15 weeks, starting in late December. For a short time, the movie was nicknamed “The Iceberg”. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
