The Babadook (2014)

“It wasn’t me, Mum! The Babadook did it! ” – Samuel

Number of Times Seen – 1 (11 May 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A single mother and her son are terrorized in their house by an entity known as the babadook.

My Take on it – I have never been a fan of film sin the horror genre and do all that I can to avoid them because they just don’t interest me.

In order to try and expand my knowledge a bit, I decided to check this one out and it definitely didn’t change my way of thinking about the genre at all.

The idea is an intriguing one that actually appealed more to me due to the underlying message than the actual horror aspects reveled throughout the film.

They find a way to keep the suspense level high and the pacing is also done well, but the story as an allegory didn’t wok enough for me to care about the characters or what will happen to them along the way.

This still helps make the viewer a bit curious as to what will happen, but it just isn’t enough.

This movie has a few scenes that go a bit too far with things into some very dark places that are a bit too crazy to actually believe or even take seriously.

Bottom Line – Intriguing idea that works not because of the horror aspect but actually due to the underlying message of the story.  The film finds a way to keep the suspense high and things move along at a nice pace to help keep the viewer curious as to what is really happening. There are a few scenes that go a bit too far with the premise and go to some very dark and crazy places.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When asked where the idea for The Babadook (2014) came from, director Jennifer Kent said, “I have a friend who’s a single mother, whose son was traumatized by this monster figure that he thought he saw everywhere in the house. So I thought, ‘What if this thing was real, on some level?’ So I made Monster (2005) [a short film] about that idea. But I couldn’t leave it alone. I kept coming back to it. And that led to The Babadook.” (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)

  2. Everything in this movie is creepy, from Noah’s weird ass behaviour to Amelia sleepwalking through her life and then starting to see things and the bloody Babadook illustrations and it ringing up and chanting its name over the phone made me feel completely unsettled. I think most of the unease comes not from anything particularly gruesome happening onscreen but more the idea that everything that is happening might very well be in Amelia’s head and that she is more of a danger to herself and Noah than the Babadook could ever be.
