The Siege of Firebase Gloria (1989)

“[in Vietnamese; subtitled] The courage of your enemies does you honor.” – Cao Van

Number of Times Seen – 1 (13 May 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A group of soldiers must defend an outlying outpost from an onslaught of enemy troops.

My Take on it – This is a movie that  came across solely due to the fact that it stars R. Lee Ermey as a tough Sergeant who needs to take command of a base being attacked by the enemy.

His own personal military experience was used to try and help make things more realistic, but the wooden acting by most the cast doesn’t help make this any more enjoyable,

Most of the characters are complete caricatures or serve no purpose but to be cannon fodder for later scenes.

Poorly written dialogue doesn’t add to the experience at all and in fact drags it down even farther.

They try too hard in attempting to make both sides seem equal here especially when needing to bend over backwards for it.

There are so many more intelligent films made about the war in Vietnam and one should check almost all of them out before venturing into watching this one.

The special effects are done quite cheaply and it’s quite apparent in the finished product.

Bottom Line – Really boring depiction of a firefight in Vietnam. The acting is wooden and most of the characters seem as if they have no idea what they are doing. The standout is obviously Ermey who nice again uses his real marine life experiences in order to help make things feel a bit more genuine.  The dialogue is too dry and doesn’t help further the plot.  Cheap special effects doesnt help to add to the realistic feel for this story. The two sides of the conflict are shown as equals in far too many ways. None of the characters are developed well enough and they all seem like either cliches and caricatures or appear solely to be used as canon fodder.  There are so many more intelligent Vietnam war films out there to watch before one gets to this one.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – R. Lee Ermey, who plays Sgt. Maj. Hafner, really is a former US Marine and veteran of the Vietnam War. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
