Number of Times Seen – Twice (23 Mar 2011 and 14 May 2020)
Brief Synopsis – A tourist traveling in Italy is recruited by a women being chased by Scotland yard in order to pretend that he is a wanted criminal.
My Take on it – This is a film that I recall seeing not long after it originally came out.
I didn’t remember much about the plot besides the fact that things were quite crazy.
Upon rewatching it, I finally realized how horrendous this film truly is and how nothing seems to work at all.
The film has a very strong cast and both Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp are fine actors in general but they lack any form of chemistry here.
The lack of chemistry really drags things down so much since it doesn’t give us any reason at all to care about these characters or anything that happens to them along the way.
The story line and plot is absolutely crazy and constantly contradicts itself as things move along.
There are some very preposterous aspects of the story that are quite hard to believe and instead makes things seem even crazier to take in.
In addition to Depp and Jolie, the supporting cast is great with Paul Bettany, Timothy Dalton and Steven Berkoff yet they all are completely wasted in these roles because none of them are given enough to do.
Bottom Line – Horrendous film that doesn’t work at all. Both Jolie and Depp are fine actors yet their characters have no chemistry together what so ever. This drags things down even more because it’s so difficult to care about either of them or about what will happen to them. The plot itself is quite strange and contradicts itself far too often. The film has some very preposterous aspects that they expect for us to believe but instead make things even crazier to take in. The supporting cast is also quite talented yet they are all completely wasted here.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – On the strength of his previous movie, The Lives of Others (2006), director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck was granted a large amount of control in casting decisions and the screenplay for his big-budget Hollywood debut. However, when shooting began, his famous lead actors took control, and in the end, he said had very little creative input. When asked later why he chose to do the film, he stated that he simply could not resist making a movie with two of the world’s most charming actors in the world’s most beautiful location.(From IMDB)
Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
