Practical Magic (1998)

“For more than 200 years we Owens women have been blamed by everything that’s ever gone wrong in this town.” – Aunt Frances Owens

Number of Times Seen – 1 (20 May 2020)

Brief Synopsis – Two sisters who are part of a witch family try to find a way to stop the curse that has been plaguing their family for Centuries.

My Take on it – This is a film that I remember hearing about when it came out yet never had much of an inclination to see what it was all about.

It’s actually a fun film that works due to the very diverse performances between the two leads Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.

Love the way that this story gives us an interesting look at the supposed history of witches and how their lives have been forged over the centuries.

Unfortunately, as hard as this story tries, they never seem to manage to hit the mark with the romantic aspects of things which takes away a lot from what they are trying to show here.

In addition to the two stars of this film, the supporting cats add a lot of flavor to the atmosphere of this film and help keep things even more exciting and fun as things progress in a slightly predictable yet satisfying way.

Bottom Line – Fun film that works due to the way that Kidman and Bullock play these characters in such diverse ways. The film gives us a nice explanation about certain aspects of the witch history which is able to establish us with facts about the way of their lives. Unfortunately, as hard as they try they never get the tone of the romance aspects of the film right and that hurts things far too much.  In addition to the two stars, this film has a great supporting cast that helps keep things fun and exciting throughout as the story begins to unfold.  Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – According to Sandra Bullock in the commentary, in the scene where Gillian and Sally get drunk with their aunts and they sling insults, the actresses actually got drunk. They were drinking some very bad tequila that Nicole Kidman brought. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
