The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.
This month’s genre has been chosen by DJ Valentine of Simplistic Reviews and we will be reviewing our favorite Reluctant Hero Movies.
Please get me your submissions by the 25th of May by sending them to firstname.lastname@example.org
Try to think out of the box! Great choice DJ!
Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Reluctant Hero Movies..…
“You stabbed the devil in the back and forced him back into the life that he had just left. You incinerated the priest’s temple. Burned it to the ground. Now he’s free of the marker, what do you think he’ll do? He had a glimpse of the other side and he embraced it. But you, Signor D’Antonio… took it away from him.” – Winston
Number of Times Seen – 1 (21 May 2020)
Brief Synopsis – John Wick must deal with the fallout from the events of the first film.
My Take on it – This is a film that I have been avoiding for a few years since I wasn’t the biggest fan of the original film on my first viewing years ago.
Boy was I wrong.
Watching this film and the original back to back tho is a great experience because of the fact that this one picks up just moments after the previous one ended.
The choice to keep the story and its momentum going was a great one that helps make things so much more enjoyable to watch unfold.
Despite the fact that Keanu Reeves aged 3 years in the interim between films, one wouldn’t know it by watching his character who is relentless in all that he does.
He is able to also continue his action star status with all that he does here which is incredible to watch.
The film’s special effects and choreography make things so intense to watch because they don;t know when to stop and eventually give us an above par action flick that doesn’t slow down at all.
The movie is able to go deeper into the sub-world created here and they give us even more details of how things work in sometimes very intricate ways.
The supporting cast in this film is once again great and they help keep things so believable as the story unfolds due to the events and various structure of things along the way.
The film’s plot is slightly more complex than the one given to us in the original, but in an all out action film like this one, te plot is of less importance and they find ways to keep it entertaining from start to finish.
Bottom Line – Love the way that this film picks up just moments after the previous film and watching them back to back helps enhance the impact of such a decision. Even after 3 years (in our time line), Reeves still is able to keep his action star status intact because he just doesn’t seem to slow down. The special effects and choreography of the fight scenes are once again above par here and that helps make this story work so well. The film goes deeper into the crime underworld and begins to explain in more detail how intricate this sub-world truly is. The supporting cast is once again great and they make us really believe the events and structure of it all so well. The plot itself is slightly more complicated than the original one, but that doesn’t matter because this is definitely an all out action film that is so entertaining from start to finish. Recommended!
Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Like the previous film, it comes pretty close. John Wick is a great reluctant hero drawn back into a world he wanted so hard to stay away from.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The badge worn by the sommelier and the keychain given to Wick are the German Anti-Partisan Guerilla Warfare badge awarded to German soldiers during WWII. They removed the swastika and replaced it with a skull for the movie. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
