“Is that a signal?” – Tom
Number of Times Seen – Twice (Video in the 90’s and 26 May 2020)
Brief Synopsis – A young man is confused when he is asked to be a pallbearer at the funeral of a former classmate who he doesn’t remember while also coming across the girl he had a crush on in his youth.
My Take on it – This is a movie that I recall seeing on video not long after it came out but besides the main cast, I didn’t remember much about it.
The story is intriguing because it’s a comedy of errors while dealing with how people view themselves at different stages in their lives.
Unfortunately, things don’t work so well with the way things are presented and that drags things down a bit.
The film tries to show us how people deal with the way they acted or were perceived in the past once life has moved on to other places.
The film sports a great and talented cast, but none are really given enough to do to make us care about any of them.
David Schwimmer and Gwyneth Paltrow are both wasted here because they have no real chemistry together and that takes so much away from the way that the story is suppose to unfold.
The film is a comedy of errors that has its moments yet things become a bit too farfetched that it enters the realm of absurdity far too often which drags things down to places which make things at points unbearable to watch.
Bottom Line – Pretty interesting idea that just doesn’t work well enough. They try to explore how one deals with the past after life has moved on. The cast is quite talented, but the story is quite subtle and none are able to really show off their acting talents. Schwimmer and Paltrow lack any kind of real chemistry here which hurts things a bit. The comedy of errors is presented well but things get too far fetched and that takes away from the believability of it all.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – David Schwimmer was so busy filming this movie that he missed his Friends (1994) co-star Lisa Kudrow’s wedding. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
