Shock and Awe (2017)

“We do not write for the people who send people’s kids to war. We write for the people whose kids get sent to war.” – John Walcott

Number of Times Seen – 1 (1 Jun 2020)

Brief Synopsis – Based on the true story of a group of reporters who tried to get the truth about whether Iraq really has Weapons of Mass Destruction prior to the US Invasion in 2002.

My Take on it – This is a movie that I’ve actually been interested in seeing for a while because of the fact that I’ve always been a fan of Rob Reiner’s films.

For some reason, I never got around to it til now.

The story is based on events that occurred almost 2 decades ago, yet they still feel quite relevant today.

The plot is quite intriguing and informative and I love the way that they are able to integrate real news footage together within the film and that really enhances things because it comes across much more realistic this way.

The movie has a very clear agenda here and stays focused on it throughout which works really well.

The cast of this film is superb and Tommy Lee Jones, Woody Harrelson, James Marsden and Reiner himself are all perfect here.

Each of them allow us to see the internal debates and conflicts that they need to wrestle with as they do their best to seek the truth.

Reiner does a wonderful job directing this movie and finds a way to keep everything flowing really well and it all comes together quite well.

Bottom Line – Really intriguing and informative film that tells is able to integrate real news stories into the shots which helps make things even more realistic. The film obviously has a very clear agenda and that is kept in check throughout as the story unfolds especially since it stays focused the whole way through. The cast is superb with Harrelson, Jones, Reiner and Marsden all allowing us to see the debates and conflicts that these characters encounter as they do all they can to uncover the truth. Reiner does a nice job directing this film and making it all comes together quite well. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Tommy Lee Jones plays the real life character Joe Galloway. The same character is played by Barry Pepper in the film We Were Soldiers.  (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
