The Disaster Blogathon – Mars Attacks! (1994)

This is my final of 3 submissions for the The Disaster Blogathon being run by J-Dub over at Dubism and Quiggy of The Midnite Drive-In

Tnx for letting me take part!

“I want the people to know that they still have 2 out of 3 branches of the government working for them, and that ain’t bad.” – President Dale

Number of Times Seen – 1 (10 Jun 2020)

Brief Synopsis – When Martian spacecraft are detected on their way to Earth, the President of the US and the citizens of the world prepare for a friendly encounter.

My Take on it – This is a film that I never had any desire to see since in general I’m not the biggest fan of these kind of films.

This blogathon gave me the opportunity to finally see what it is all about.

This is a fun film that has some humorous moments scatters among the silliness of it all.

The story tries to show a very crazy and silly perspective on a would be alien invasion.

The film sports a great cast and despite the fact that most of them has so little to do besides being disaster movie canon fodder, it’s still enjoyable to see them appear (even for so short a span of time).

They don;t develop any of the characters on more than a superficial and stereotypical way and that makes it so much harder to care about any of them.

The film’s special effects help make this even more enjoyable to watch because of the way that it’s presented.

The story itself is quite strange but that is par for the course for a Tim Burton film.

He is able to bring his usual zaniness to the story and the film’s pseudo-50’s style and look help make things even more intriguing to watch despite the fact that overall the movie has very little to offer.

Bottom Line – Has some very funny moments, but overall, this is a completely crazy and silly look at a potential alien invasion. The cats is stellar, but most of them have little to nothing to do besides being typical disaster canon fodder. None of the characters are developed more than on a superficial way and there is no reason to care about any of them. The special effects are done well and that is the best part of this film because the story is a bit too strange. Burton brings his usual zaniness to things and the pseudo-50’s look helps make things a bit more intriguing to watch eventhough this film really has so little to offer.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The writers weren’t sure what the Martians should sound like, so the script had “ack, ack, ack, ack” for all of their lines of dialogue. That became the Martians’ actual dialogue. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)

  2. Hi Rob, I like satire of this one and the eclectic collection of stars, from the iconic Nicholson and Close to old timers like Sylvia Sidney and newcomers like Sarah Jessica Parker. But the over the top gore and violence always give me a start…this is truly nihilistic in its approach. Black comedy indeed!
