“New York public schools are desperate for good teachers. Newspaper says they’re begging for them. Dad, every year I tell my students to go for what they want in life – dream big, take risks. It’s time I start living up to my own words. ” – Ron Clark

Brief Synopsis – A teacher wishing to inspire more students moves to New York City to try and find a job in a disadvantaged area.
My Take on it – This is a film that I came across recently by accident and was curious to see how Matthew Perry would fare in a dramatic role like this.
The way that the story is told is done in an inspirational way and it works quiet well.
The story feels a bit hampered by the fact that it is a made for TV movie and therefore many parts of the story feel a bit too toned down.
Perry is great in the lead role and definitely shows that he knows how to take on serious and dramatic roles like this role and make them work.
The story is told in a paint by numbers fashion that fits in with the genre, but the added value of some unique and innovative scenes helps make it stand out a bit.
This story is based on true events and that helps make things feel even more impactful in its message about education even if things are far from being perfect here.
Bottom Line – Inspirational story that works quite well despite feeling trapped due to it being a made for TV movie. Perry shows that he can be a great dramatic actor with this role. The story seems to hit most of the notes in this kind of film but it does have a few unique and innovative scenes that help it stand apart. The fact that this is based on a true story helps make it feel more impactful in its message even if it is still far from being perfect. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This movie earned Matthew Perry his first Golden Globe nomination. Prior to that, he and David Schwimmer were the only cast members of Friends (1994) who never received any nomination during the ten years of the show. Schwimmer still hasn’t got any (as of 2019). (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
