A Little Sex (1982)

“That’s the good thing about marriage. It’s the only real cure for divorce.” – Oliver

Number of Times Seen – 1 (18 Jun 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A philandering man must try and stay faithful to his new wife despite so many temptations along the way.

My Take on it – This is a film that I knew nothing about before coming across it accidentally.

Unfortunately, it has a great premise yet never manages to capitalize on it and make it work more efficiently.

The cast is quite talented yet they all seem wasted here,.

Tim Matheson and Kate Capshaw play the leads yet neither is portrayed sympathetically enough for the viewer to care about them at all.

The supporting cats is also great and features John Glover, Wendie Malick and Edward Hermann yet they all seem wasted here because none of their characters are developed more thoroughly and they end up feeling like stereotypes the whole way through.

The story doesn’t feel fresh or innovative enough in a genre that has been used and reused so often over the years and this is quite a shame since they have such a talented cast.

The film has a great message to tell yet they never seem to find a way to present it efficiently enough for the viewer to actually care.

Bottom Line – Intriguing idea that doesn’t work as well as they probably had hoped it would. The lead cast of Mathenson and Capshaw are both quite talented but they don’t allow the characters to come across sympathetically at all. The supporting cast includes Glover, Hermann and Malick are also great actors, but once again the story seems to hamper them from really doing something here. The story itself isn’t fresh or innovative in what it tries to do and doesn’t find its voice in an overused genre which is shame given the talent that is somewhat wasted here.  The messgae they are trying to send forth is actually a great one, yet they never manage to present it in a way that we can really care about it.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Kate Capshaw originally read for a small supporting role, but director Bruce Paltrow decided to give her the female lead instead. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
