The Rescue (1988)

“[after being asked to get the mission orders] No. No! My dad will buy an electric chair and my mom will pull the switch. ” – Max Rothman

Number of Times Seen – at least twice (Cable in the 80’s and 18 Jun 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A group of teenagers living on an Army base in South Korea plan a rescue of their fathers who have been captured during a covert mission and are being held in a North Korean prison.

My Take on it –This is a film that I recall seeing on cable as a kid yet didn’t recall anything about it.

This probably is because this is such an unremarkable and unmemorable story.

This is a horrendous film that fits in the 80’s genre of teen action films.

This genre is quite hit or miss and this film fits into the latter category quite comfortably.

The story and plot is really silly and laughable and doesn’t work at all because nothing they say or do here even seems remotely plausible.

The plot is quite a mess and it’s nearly impossible to take anything that happens seriously like they would want us to.

The special effects are also poorly done and this makes it even less believable because it all looks so unprofessional the whole way through.

Bottom Line – Laughable film that is so silly the whole way through. The plot itself is a mess and it is so hard to take anything that the characters say or do here in any serious way.  The special effects are poorly done and that even makes the action scenes look so unprofessional the whole way through. The plot of this film helps it fit into the niche of 80’s action films with kids as the focal point, but this is one of the worst of the lot which is a shame since there are a few that actually work well and seem plausible unlike this one.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The prison camp set in this movie was built (and still stands) at Deer Park Heights outside of Queenstown, New Zealand (where much of the filming of Rohan was also done for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)) (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
