Love & Basketball (2000)

“All’s fair in love and basketball. ” – Quincy

Number of Times Seen – 1 (1 Jul 2020)

Brief Synopsis – Two neighbors, a boy and a girl have a shared friendship and love of the sport of basketball, but can their friendship turn into something more.

My Take on it – This is a film that I came across by accident and despite it’s intriguing title works quite well.

They are able to show how the love and aspirations of playing professional sports can be so impactful on a persona and their personality over the course of their lives.

The characters are developed really well over the course of the two decades pf their lives that we can a peek into and they do this in a very effective way.

Omar Epps and Sanaa Latham are both great in the lead roles and helps make us care so much about them along the way.

The film gives us the perspectives of events from both of their viewpoints and that helps make things even more powerful because we can learn so much about their passions for the sport and for one another at the same time.

This helps make things even more fascinating to watch as things unfold in directions that keep things enjoyable to view the whole way through.

Bottom Line – Great film that is able to show us how the love and aspirations for a sports passion can affect someone in so many ways over the course of their life. The story works because they are able to develop these characters and their personalities over the course of the 2 decades of the story in an effective way. Epps and Lathan are  both great in these roles and help make us care so much about them and what they will do here. The way that the film gives us the perspective of both of these characters on how their love for basketball and of each other works well in helping create something really fascinating to watch unfold. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Producer Spike Lee believed the female lead should have believable basketball skills. Gina Prince-Bythewood said in an interview “I saw over 700 people for the part: actors, ballplayers, people who had never acted before in their life. It finally came down to Sanaa [Lathan] and Niesha Butler [a star player at Georgia Tech and 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference rookie of the year]. I put Sanaa with a basketball coach for two months and Niesha with an acting coach.” (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
