Super Fly (1972)

“I know it’s a rotten game, but it’s the only one The Man left us to play. That’s the stone, cold truth.” – Eddie

Number of Times Seen – 1 (1 Jul 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A drug dealer tries to make one last score before he plans to retire.

My Take on it – This is a film that I have heard about for years, yet never had any real desire to see it until now.

This movie is among the most famous blacksploitation films and like most of the films in the genre, they come across in a pretty silly way and tat makes it so much harder to actually take it seriously.

The film’s plot is one that has been used so often over the years and there are cases where this idea is used more effectively than here.

Ron O’Neal is fun in the lead role and and they manage to get the look and feel right here for this kind of film.

The film’s soundtrack makes it even more enjoyable and fun to watch but even that can’t help make things more effective all around.

There isn’t really much to take from this kind of film besides the fact that crime and corruption really permeated in that time and place at a really high level.

This is a film that could have been much better but it still fits in really well to the blacksploitation genre. quite well.

Bottom Line – Really silly film that is so hard to take seriously. The plot is one that has been used often and in some instances much more effectively than they manage here. O’Neal is fun in the lead role and the look and feel of the film works for what they are trying to do here. The soundtrack is truly what makes this film even more enjoyable to watch despite there not being much to take from this tale besides the way that corruption and crime has permeated the streets to such a high level.  Could have been much better, but still fits in with the blacksploitation genre.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The script was only 45 pages long, which explains why there are so many shots of people walking, driving, etc. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
