The Art of War (2000)

“By the time we’re done with you, we’re going to make Lee Harvey Oswald look like a f*cking boy scout.” – Bly

Number of Times Seen – 1 (7 Jul 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A UN operative is framed for an assassination that he didn’t commit and must try and find a way to prove his innocence.

My Take on it – This is the kind of film that delivers exactly what one might expect and that has both positive and negative aspects.

This is a typical Wesley Snipes action thriller that is able to give us some nice fight sequences between Snipes and the bad guys yet ultimately is just a paint by numbers thriller that doesn’t manage to add anything to the genre.

The story isn’t very unique and it takes so much away from caring about what happens to the characters along the way.

They do know how to create some really thrilling action scenes that work well and help keep things enjoyable and realistic.

Like in most action thrillers like this one, Snipes’ character is given superhero status in all that he does, yet they still make things feel somewhat down to Earth the whole way through.

The film is largely motored along by a conspiracy theory motive and that both helps and hurts things here.

The plot gets a bit too convoluted along the way and that makes things slightly confusing as they constantly try to find ways to keep things more intriguing yet in the end all they end up doing is keeping things far too predictable and obvious in the way they all play out.

Bottom Line – Typical Snipes action films that has it’s moments yet is ultimately just a paint by numbers action thriller. The story itself isn’t very unique and that hurts things a bit. The action scenes tho are done really well and they come across as being quite realistic despite the superhuman status that Snipes’ character is given here.  The plot gets a bit too convoluted as they try over and over to make this conspiracy theory story more intriguing despite it being a bit too predictable and obvious the whole way through.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The tones dialed for Lo Kee Bakery, the Gentleman’s Club, are the first few notes of the tune to “Yankee Doodle”. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
