Genre Guesstimation – A Cop (1972)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by Howard Casner of Ranting and Ravings and we will be reviewing our favorite French Film Noir.

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Jul by sending them to

Try to think out of the box! Great choice Howard!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of French Film Noir…..

“People will do the wrong thing, they always do.” – Commissaire Edouard Coleman

Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Jul 2020)

Brief Synopsis – After completing a bank robbery, a gang of thieves attempt a more dangerous heist aboard a speeding train all the while trying to evade a detective hot on their trail.

My Take on it – Anyone who knows me, knows that this month’s genre is not one that I usually am drawn to.

This made things a bit more difficult to find films to watch, but in my constant journey to expand my film knowledge into realms that I am less familiar and comfortable with, I was able to find some very interesting movies to watch for this series.

This is a fun cat and mouse film that does a wonderful job focusing on both sides of the law.

We get to see the way that the criminals plan and execute their heists and how the police try to find them once they have committed these crimes.

The film does a great job showing how these criminals plan their crimes especially giving us details of their methods and more importantly the individual personalities and expectations of each of them.

The film is fast paced and keeps things both intriguing and interesting throughout.

The stakes are quite apparent the whole way through as things evolve in ways that we might not necessarily expect.

The stunts used for some of the scenes are quite breathtaking to watch and this helps make the movie so much more enjoyable to watch because it helps raise the level of suspense and tension throughout.

Bottom Line – Great cat and mouse film that is able to focus on both sides of the story as they try to get their jobs done in the most efficient way. The way that they show how the criminals perpetrate their crimes is quite intriguing to watch as we learn so much about their methods and most importantly their personalities along the way. The story is fast paced and we constantly know what is at stake as the story evolves along the way.  Some of the stunts in the film are quite breathtaking to watch and that helps make this such an enjoyable heist film. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When planning the train robbery they calculate a time frame of 20 minutes. When the robbery actually takes place, the sequence is exactly 20 minutes long. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Comes quite close. They keep things quite suspenseful and thriller the entire way through.

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
