Seven Years in Tibet (1997)

“We have a saying in Tibet: If a problem can be solved there is no use worrying about it. If it can’t be solved, worrying will do no good.” – Dalai Lama

Number of Times Seen – 1 (9 Jul 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A German mountain climber traveling in the Far East during the outbreak of World War II is imprisoned by the British before he is able to escape to Tibet where he befriends the young Dalai Lama.

My Take on it – This is a film that I heard about when it came out yet never had much desire to see what it was all about.

The premise itself is intriguing yet they don’t manage to find a way to develop the characters enough for the viewer to really care about them as they go through various ordeals.

The cinematography is done extremely well which helps make things quite wondrous to view due to the flowing landscapes throughout.

The film has a great cast led by Brad Pitt who shows that he is able to lead such a epic style film.

Unfortunately, the cast isn’t given enough to work with and they mostly come across as seeming quite wooden in all that they do.

The chemistry between Pitt and the child actor playing the young Dalai Lama is also quite weak and it’s hard to believe the kind of connection that they are suppose to have had together.

The story is presented in a very shallow way which hurts thing too much and makes it far less effective than it probably should be which is a shame.

Bottom Line – Interesting premise that just doesn’t work well enough for the viewer to care about the characters. The cinematography is wondrous to watch as we get to see some really nice flowing landscapes. The cast is great even though they aren’t given enough to do. Pitt does a nice job in the lead role and shows how much potential he has to lead an epic story, but this one is a bit too shallow for it be more effective.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When questioned about his stance on the China/Tibet problem by Time magazine, Brad Pitt replied “Who cares what I think China should do about Tibet? I’m a f*cking actor… I’m a grown man who puts on make-up”.(From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
