Another Stakeout (1993)

“I usually wait about three days before introducing myself to the people I’m staking out!” – Chris Lecce

Number of Times Seen – 1 (20 Jul 2020)

Brief Synopsis – Two detectives are sent with an assistant district attorney to stake out a lake house where a mafia witness is suspected of hiding out.

My Take on it – Hollywood has been known to try and capitalize on successful films by creating sequels where we can once again revisit the characters.

This film is a perfect example of that ploy, yet it fails to actually make something enjoyable to watch because everything that they do here is terrible.

Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez are back in their roles but the story downplays their banter that helped give them such great chemistry in the previous film

The addition of Rose O’Donnell is quite baffling because her character doesn’t manage to add anything to this story and in fact, detracts from it because of the various mistakes she makes along the way make this even more of a chore to try and get through.

The plot is quite slim and doesn’t give these characters much to do.

It also takes away from any thrilling aspects that one might expect to find here.

Miguel Ferrer was a great actor, but his role here is far too shallow and that hurts things far too much.

The dialogue and jokes are poorly written and don”t allow for these characters to ave a fun time like we could expect.

Bottom Line – Horrendous sequel that doesn’t work at all. Dreyfuss and Estevez’s fun chemistry from the first film is downplayed here in exchange for O’Donnell joining them. Her characters seems too extraneous for this kind of story and makes things so much more unbearable to watch. The plot is a bit too thin and Ferrer as the bad guy is too shallow which turns this all into a silly farce. Truly another example of a Hollywood attempt to capitalize on a successful film by creating a sequel but n this case, it fails miserably.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – As Luella walks past the television in the safe house, the movie being played is Stakeout (1987). (From IMDB)
