“Just for gringos and dumb cops.” – Claudio Castillo
Number of Times Seen – 1 (23 Jul 2020)
Brief Synopsis – An activist in Tijuana trying to monitor a local election gets involved in the mysterious death of 27 local workers which may be connected to the disappearance of two Americans.
My Take on it – This is a film that I knew nothing about before watching it but was very intrigued by the cast that includes Jeff Daniels, James Spader, Clifton Collins Jr. and Portia Derossi.
The premise is an intriguing one yet fails to work as well as one might expect it to.
Despite having a great cast, Daniels is the only one who doesn’t feel wasted or even underused in his role.
The story is fraught with plot holes that take away form being able to really care about what happens to these characters along the way.
The story tries to add far too many aspects and entities to the plot in order to make things more impactful yet they only seem to manage to make things more convoluted and complicated along the way.
There are a few nice twists and turns along the way that help a bit but unfortunately they are too few and far between and they ultimately fail to help make things come across in a more enjoyable and interesting fashion which is a shame.
Bottom Line – Interesting premise that just doesn’t work as well as one might hope. They have a great cast, yet besides Daniels, they all feel underused and wasted in these roles. The story has far too many plot holes for its own good and that detracts from the story as it moves along. They add in too many different entities into the story which makes things far too convoluted when trying to figure things out. The film does have a few nice surprises along the way, but they are few and far enough and don’t help make things more enjoyable to watch.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Rhodes and Emily Thompson are drinking “doubles” in the bar; as they converse, their glasses go from newly filled to almost empty to newly filled again within moments. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
