Genre Guesstimation – Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story (2009)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by Patty of CaftanWoman.com and we will be reviewing our favorite Medical Dramas.

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Aug by sending them to medicalpatty@movierob.net

Try to think out of the box! Great choice Patty!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Medical Dramas…..

“I always said, you can do anything anyone else can do, only you can do it better.” – Sonya Carson

Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Aug 2020)

Brief Synopsis – Biography of a very talented surgeon who’s life was enhanced by the way he was brought up by his stern mother.

My Take on it – This is a film that I came across while researching films for this genre.

I knew nothing about the story or Ben Carson besides the fact that he ran for President in 2016.

This film does a wonderful job showing the building blocks of Carson’s life in order to help shape one’s mind and personality.

The story shows us some very integral vignettes of his life that helped him strive for the greatness that he achieved due to his will and his talent.

Cuba Gooding Jr. is great in the lead role and despite the fact that he only plays this character in his later years he still can see the kind of devotion and talent that he uses in order to help his patients and his family as things progress.

The film only tells us about his life up to that point, but knowing that he eventually went on to run for President less than a decade later says so much because we can see how the heights he was able to reach in the film were surpassed due to the epilogue of his life not long afterwards.

Bottom Line – Great look at the various parts of a life that help someone achieve greatness. This film does a wonderful job showing us the building blocks thru life that helped create this man and his talents as a surgeon. Gooding Jr. is great in the lead role, even if he only plays the character in his later years, but we can see his devotion to family and patients throughout. Knowing the epilogue of Carson life even after the film ends adds even more to the story because we can see the heights that his career and talents led him to even after he ended his medical career.  Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Cuba Gooding Jr. (Ben Carson) and Aunjanue Ellis (Candy Carson) are both the same age as Kimberly Elise, the actress who portrays Ben Carson’s mother in the film. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Comes quite close, but something is missing that would have made this even more compelling.

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
