Number of Times Seen – Twice (22 Apr 2012 and 4 Aug 2020)
Brief Synopsis –Based on the true story of a TV producer who wants to raise his stations ratings, so he decides to make a TV show that follows a family around 24/7.
My Take on it – This is a film that I saw back when it came out and recalled how great a premise they have especially since it reflects how our world works.
This film is able to highlight the power of Reality TV and why it was so powerful back in the 70’s and remains so until today.
The film does a great job dealing with the idea of how cameras and their crews can inadvertently affect the outcome of situations in these people’s lives.
We also get to see the way that a film maker can affect the ‘portrayal of the characters’ just by being there.
The cast is superb with Tim Robbins, Diane lane and James Gandolfini allowing us to really see why we all love to watch Reality TV in order to get a voyeuristic viewpoint of strangers lives.
This is the power of Reality TV that is able to draw so many people in to watch and partake in things so openly and freely largely due to their being blinded by their dreams of fame and glory y just being a part of it all.
Bottom Line – Great story that is able to highlight why reality TV was so popular in the 70’s and remains so until today. The story shows how cameras and crews can affect the way that reality comes across to the viewer and by filming people with their knowledge, it can actually change the outcome of real life. The cast is superb with Robbins, Lane and Gandolfini showing the power of Reality TV on the world. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Craig Gilbert, portrayed here by James Gandolfini, was the award-winning documentary filmmaker who created, wrote, directed, and produced the original An American Family (1973) series on PBS. Thanks to the controversy surrounding the iconic series, it would prove to be his final credit. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
