Genre Guesstimation – Green for Danger (1946)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by Patty of and we will be reviewing our favorite Medical Dramas.

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Aug by sending them to

Try to think out of the box! Great choice Patty!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Medical Dramas…..

“The police force has not a monopoly of fallen arches, Dr. Barnes. Ask any chiropodist.” – Inspector Cockrill

Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Aug 2020)

Brief Synopsis – Following the mysterious death of a nurse after a patient dies during an operation, an inspector from Scotland Yard tries to figure out what happened.

My Take on it – This is a film that I came across while doing research for this month’s genre.

I had never even heard of the film beforehand and was intrigued by the fact that Alistair Sim was in it.

The story itself is quite clever and they find ways to keep things thrilling and suspenseful as things unfold.

The cast is great, but Sim stands far above every one else as he steals every scene he appears in while trying to solve this mystery.

They are able to find a way to combine a seemingly regular murder mystery within a busy hospital while adding in connection between the characters lives during the war a few years earlier.

The film uses this kind of connection to show how the lives of these characters have progressed during the intervening years sometimes in ways that one might not have expected.

Love the way that the title seems to have a double meaning since it’s a veiled reference to some important plot points while also remaining somewhat mysterious about everything happening.

Bottom Line – Clever idea that works quite well. The cast is great with Sim stealing the show as he tries to solve this mystery. The story is able to combine a regular murder mystery within a hospital with connections to things that happened a few years earlier during the war. This connection helps us see how lives progress and move along after war time in ways one might not actually expect.  Love the way that the title is a veiled reference to part of the plot while also working to remain mysterious. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Although a popular Scotland Yard detective, Christianna Brand’s hero only appeared in this movie. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not quite clever mystery in a hospital that is thrilling to watch based on how things play out.

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
