Austin Powers – The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)

“I can’t believe Vanessa, my bride, my one true love, the woman who taught me the beauty of monogamy, was a fembot all along. Wait a tick, that means I’m single again! Oh behave!”- Austin

Number of Times Seen – Twice (24 Oct 2001 and 16 Aug 2020)

Brief Synopsis – Sequel to the first film about a super spy from the 1960’s living in the modern world while trying to capture his arch enemy Dr. Evil.

My Take on it – This film is the continuation of the Austin Powers saga and is enjoyable besides the fact that they mostly recycle many of the themes from the first movie.

The jokes and characters are also carbon copies of the ones in the first film and that hurts things a bit too much because it doesn’t feel original enough.

Mike Myers once again does a fun job playing the two lead roles.

In addition, he also plays a third character who is an homage to his good friend Chris Farley who passed away before this film was made.

Once again, the humor of this film goes a bot too far and that makes things slightly overbearing to watch.

The film’s plot is extremely silly especially since it deals with time travel and they contradict so much of hat most films say about time travel and cause far too many paradoxes given the way that they present things here.

Fun seeing Rob Lowe in a role very different from the kinds he is usually known for.

Bottom Line – Enjoyable sequel that just doesn’t work as well as the original largely due to the way that they pretty much recycle themes and jokes from the first film. Myers once again does a nice job as the dual lead characters and even adds in another character for him to portray. The jokes go a bit too far here too and that makes things overbearing and trite to watch. The plot itself is quite silly and convoluted and would cause so many different kind of time paradoxes by the way it’s all presented.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Rob Lowe’s impression of Robert Wagner was developed several years before its appearance in the film. Lowe dated one of Wagner’s daughters. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
