Number of Times Seen – 1 (25 Aug 2020)
Brief Synopsis – After there son goes into a mysterious coma, a couple decide to try to uncover the truth as to what has happened to him.
My Take on it – As someone who isn’t a fan of horror movies, I never had any desire to see what this was about.
My good friend Damien of the Damien Riley Podcast challenged me to watch this film and discuss it on his podcast, and as a movie blogger always up for a challenge, I decided to see what it was all about.
This is actually an interesting horror film that I was somewhat conflicted about since there were certain supernatural aspects of the story that I really liked, while the horror aspects were less appealing to me.
They actually find a way to mix supernatural with paranormal themes together in an impressive way that helps make this story work better.
The film has a great cast with Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne and Barbara Hershey all giving great performances.
Lin Shaye and her entourage are so much fun to watch here and the three of them steal every scene that they appear in.
This film does a nice job trying to explain the unique concepts discussed her, even if something feels missing within the explanations.
The film has a few twists that feel more tacked on than necessary.
The way that they describe the other world – The Further helps make the actual theme of this film feel a bit more ambiguous as to whether this is really a horror or sci-fi film which is able to add so much to things here.
Check out the podcast that Damien and I did about this film and The Omen (1976) here.
Bottom Line – Interesting horror film that is able to mix supernatural and paranormal events together really well. The cast is great with Wilson, Byrne and Hershey doing nice jobs with their roles. Shaye and her entourage steal every scene they are in because they manage to keep things so much fun. They do a great job explaining the new concepts that are discussed here. The way they describe ‘the further’ can allow it to be both within the supernatural and sci fi realms which adds so much to things here. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The second time Lin Shaye appeared in a movie about the afterlife. She was the high school teacher in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
