Jeff Bridges: The Dude Abides (2011)

“A lot of actors think that they are in a baseball game and they’re supposed to hit a home run every time. Acting isn’t – isn’t hitting home runs out of the park. Acting is a tennis game. If you hit that ball out of the court, you have no game.” – Cybill Shepard

Number of Times Seen – 1 (24 Aug 2020)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary about the eclectic life of actor/musician, photographer and artist Jeff Bridges and his very varied career.

My Take on it – Such a great documentary that is able t take a hard look at one of the most talented actors working.

This film is able to find a way to show us who he is and we get to see his essence and how that affects his work.

The film uses interviews with his family, friends, past co-stars and colleagues in order to give us a more complete look as to who he is and why he has been so successful as an actor over the years.

The fact that his talents go beyond just acting are fully realized here as we get to see how prolific he is in music, photography, writing, art among other fields.

He was always supported by his family in all that he chose to do has helped him amass such a long career of more than 50 years as an actor.

He reached the pinnacle of his career when he won an Oscar for Best Actor for his work in Crazy Heart (2009).

His long career also afforded him the opportunity to work with some of the best actors and actresses that Hollywood has had to offer.

The film also gives us his own keen observations on why he has been so successful in both his life and in his career and this allows us to get a more profound understanding of how he achieved the heights that he has reached over the years

Bottom Line – Amazing documentary that really is able to capture the essence of Bridges. The interviews with family, friends, co-stars and colleagues are quite poignant in the way that they help describe the true nature of this very prolific actor. His talents go beyond the screen and venture into music, art, photography among other talents. The support that he got from his family as he was starting oyt has stayed with him for his more than 50+ year acting history and helped him reach the pinnacle of his craft with his Oscar win for Best Actor in Crazy Heart (2009).  His storied acting career spans numerous decades while also allowing him the opportunity to perform together with some of the best that Hollywood has ever had to offer.  His own observations on his life and career are also quite profound and help us get a better understanding of who he truly is. Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Bridges has been an amateur photographer since high school and began taking photographs on film sets during Starman, at the suggestion of co-star Karen Allen. Since 1980, he began photographing on and off set shots with his favorite camera, a Widelux F8. He published many of these photographs online and published a book in 2003 entitled, Pictures: Photographs by Jeff Bridges. (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10)
