Let’s see what I thought of this movie:

__________________________________________

“Are you married?” – Patient

“No, I’m a doctor.” – Dr. Susan Lewis

Number of Times Seen – At least twice (Debut in ’94 and 27 Aug 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A day in the life of the doctors, nurses and support staff in a busy Chicago hospital ER.

My Take on it – This is a film that I have always been in awe of every since I first saw it 26 years ago.

They do a wonderful job depicting the kind of rigorous work that the dedicated doctors, nurses and support staff of an ER need to do on a daily basis.

They find a way to develop this very eclectic group of characters really well and show how important and integral each of them is for the system to work properly.

The way that the story jumps around between patients and cases helps show the varied kind of work that these men and women deal with all the time.

The fact that they must juggle their personal and professional lives is also shown really well because it is such a difficult thing to do.

The hierarchy of the different kinds of doctors based on experience is also shown really well in order for us to get an idea of how things work.

The movie has great background music that is subtle and allows for things to feel so much more suspenseful while adding poignancy to everything that happens.

The film’s cast is superb and they fact that the chemistry between them is so fluid helps us learn so much about them as the story moves along.

Loved seeing Anthony Edwards, George Clooney, Julainna Margulies, Noah Wiley, Eriq La Salle and William H. Macy because they are all so great here.

In addition, it also shows how important their work is.

I’m astounded by the fact that Michael Crichton wrote the script for this film twenty years before it was aired as a TV Pilot [see Trivia Section below].

It shows how timeless such a story can be.

The idea that even now, 26 years later,, the story is still relevant is quiet amazing because it truly shows how this kind of work doesn’t necessary change much due to its constant importance in the world.

Bottom Line – Amazing depiction of the rigorous job of working in an ER. This film is able to develop the various characters really well while showing how integral and important this work can be. The story jumps around between patients and cases and that allows us to see the very eclectic kind of work these dedicated professional must deal with all the time.  They do a wonderful job showing us the hierarchy of the various levels of the doctors in the hospital and how things work in such a place. The background music helps add so much to the suspense of things and its subtle nature helps add so much more poignancy to the story. The cast is superb and the chemistry between the characters is exquisite throughout as we learn so much about their characters and the way that this kind of work is so important. The fact that Crichton wrote this script twenty years [see Trivia Section below] before it aired shows the timelessness of the story and even 26 years after it’s debut, the stories and characters still seem relevant which says so much about this profession. Highly Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Michael Crichton wrote the script for the pilot episode, and it remained unchanged from when he wrote it twenty years earlier. (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy (10/10)

  2. I worked as a secretary for the medical department of our police service, which was staffed by four nurses and a part-time doctor. All of my bosses declared that ER was the most realistic representation of their hospital work that they had ever seen. And, as you stated, it holds up and represents a chaotic and emotionally draining profession.
