Cold Turkey (1971)

This a Covid-19 2020 minireview!

“The booze bone is connected to the smoke bone and the smoke bone is connected to the head bone and that’s the word of the Lord!” – Edgar Stopworth

Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Sep 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A tobacco company offers a huge cash reward to any town that is willing to give up smoking for 30 days.

Bottom Line – Great idea that works really well because of the way that the concept is slightly off the wall. The film does a nice job showing how abstinence from smoking can lead to so many other vies and it’s fun watching it play out. The characters are a bit too superficial which is slightly problematic, but the way that they present things manages to achieve what they try to do here. The cast is lots of fun to watch especially Dick Van Dyke who is truly hilarious in this film because it is a bit more rowdy than we are used to seeing from him. The supporting cast is also quite fun to watch because they help add to the story. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – During the off days of filming, in Iowa, Dick Van Dyke rented a car to drive around the open spaces and small towns locally. He ran out of gas one day, and sat on the roof of his car whistling by putting a blade of grass up to his teeth and blowing. A farmer happened by and gave Van Dyke a lift to get gas. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
