Host (2020)

“It’ll be fine. The woman is a friend of mine. So she’s done it a bunch of times for me. She’ll kind of guide everyone through it, we’ll just kinda have to follow her instructions. So just please, she is a friend of mine, not that I don’t think you would, please take it seriously tho and be respectful.” – Haley

Number of Times Seen – 1 (4 Sep 2020)

Brief Synopsis – During the Pandemic, a group of friends perform a seance over zoom where strange things begin to happen.

My Take on it – Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m not a fan of horror movies at all, but the premise of this one got me very curious.

The idea for this film is extremely clever and original in all that they do and the fact that it works so well adds so much to the enjoyment of things.

This film’s choice to make a story based solely on a zoom connection is really ingenious and they have now possibly opened u a new way of making films especially in the new reality that we are all living in.

The story moves along at a great pace and just like most horror movies, they don’t explain things in a very descriptive way, yet they still find ways to keep things mysterious and interesting throughout.

The relatively short run time helps emphasize the fact that a movie doesn’t need to be overly long in order to be effective and coming in at a tad under an hour is perfect for this kind of story.

They are able to utilize Zoom to the fullest here and for those of us (most of us, I’m sure) who are familiar with the program, will find a connection to all that happens via this split screen.

The fact that the actors are all unfamiliar helps add so much to the realism of it all and makes us truly believe that this is just a Zoom conversation between a group of real friends.

Bottom Line – Really clever and original idea that works really well. They found a great way to create a new kind of film based on connections via zoom. Like most horror films, this one doesn’t explain things in a detailed way, yet they still find a way to keep it interesting. The use of Zoom is utilized really well here which adds to the whole idea and premise.  None of the actors are familiar which also adds to the suspense of it all because they all seem like a real group of friends instead of actors.  The short run time of just under an hour is perfect for creating such a story. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Although scripted the cast was allowed to improvise, for instance the moment when Haley sneezes and the cast reacts to it was not planned. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
