Flashdance (1983)

“Don’t you understand? When you give up your dream, you die.” – Nick

Number of Times Seen – at least twice (11 Sep 2009 and 22 Sep 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A welder by day and dancer by night tries to fulfill her dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer.

My Take on it – This is a film that it highly known for a very iconic dancing scene that features a bucket of water.

Unfortunately, despite having an intriguing premise, this film just fails to come across in a believable manner which hurts things far too much.

This is actually surprising given the fact that this is somewhat based on truthץ

There is no question that Jennifer Beals is quite sexy in this role and fits this part really well.

This helps the dance scenes work so well.

Unfortunately, the story itself is very weak and it doesn’t feel original or unique enough in all that they try to do.

The love story aspect of this film fails to make things more interesting since there is very poor chemistry between Beals and her co star Michael Nouri.

The main things that works here is the great 80’s soundtrack which is mixed into the story so well..

Maniac and the Oscar winning song What a Feeling are both so catchy and fun to listen to despite this film failing to be more impactful.

Check out these songs below

Bottom Line – Interesting premise that just isn’t believable enough despite being based on a true story. Beals is quite sexy in this film and that helps the dance scenes work really well, but the story itself is quite weak and feels far too typical. The love story aspect of the film doesn’t work because there is no chemistry between Beals and her costar Nouri. The one thing that works really well in this film is the 80’s soundtrack including Maniac and the Oscar winning What A Feeling but even those catchy tunes can’t help make this story more enjoyable or impactful n what it tries to say.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Jennifer Beals’ trend-setting collarless sweatshirt came about by accident. The sweatshirt, which Beals brought from home, had shrunk in the wash and she had to cut the collar off in order to get it over her head. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (4/10)
