“We do what we have to do in order to do what we want to do.” – James Farmer Jr.
Number of Times Seen – Twice (29 Dec 2007 and 11 Oct 2020)
Brief Synopsis – A scrupulous teacher tries to create a winning debate team in his University which is located in the deep South during the days of segregation.
Bottom Line – Really powerful story that is able to stay engaging throughout. The characters are all developed really well and we get a clear sense of who they each are and what they are trying accomplish, The dialogue is superbly written which is extremely important in a film about the art of debating. The fact that this is based on a real story adds even more to the story. Love the way that they don;t try to shy away from the problems of the segregated South because it adds so much more poignancy to the story as it unfolds. Recommended!
