Number of Times Seen – 1 (19 Oct 2020)
Brief Synopsis – A struggling minor league baseball team hires an ape to play third base.
My Take on it – This is a film that I recall hearing about when it came out, yet the premise seemed so silly that I steered clear away from it for nearly twenty five years.
I should have waited longer.
This was a terrible film that has such a crazy premise that fails to work on any level.
The story itself is so unrealistic and makes no sense at all.
Matt Leblanc is a great comedic actor, yet here, he isn’t able to find a way to make things work at all.
The interactions between the chimpanzee and the actors is far too awkward and doesn’t allow for the story to flow in any manner.
As the story moves along, things get stranger and stranger and that doesn’t help the realism of anything.
The film has a very talented supporting cast, yet none of them are recognizable here as being talented because they aren’t given anything interesting enough to do here that would make us care about them or any of their actions.
The baseball scenes are fine, yet not very memorable.
Bottom Line – Really horrendous film that makes no sense what so ever. LeBlanc knows how to be a great comedic actor, but he doesn’t work in this role at all. The interactions between the chimpanzee and the characters is quite unrealistic and things get stranger and stranger as the story moves along. The supporting cats has some very talented actors, but one wouldn’t know it by seeing this film, because no one is given anything interesting to do. The baseball scenes are all ok, yet they fail to give us anything that would be memorable as the story progresses.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Ed, the chimp, is actually “just a guy in a suit” (according to Matt Leblanc), with a mechanically controlled head. That head made so much noise that all the dialogue in the scenes which included the “chimp” had to be re-dubbed in post-production. (From IMDB)
Rating – Razzie Worthy (2/10)
