Witness to 9/11: In the Shadows of Ground Zero (2020)

“People will divide their lives around today. You know, before the World Trade Centers came down and after.  Nothing will be the same after this. I just hope there’s no war as a result of this.” – Man

Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Nov 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A look at the reactions of people on the street as the events of 9/11 take place in real time.

My Take on it – Most of us are able to recall where we were and what we were doing during the events of the fateful day that is now known as 9/11.

The premise of this film is to show the audience the knee jerk reactions of lots of people as the events of that day unfolded.

The choice to use random interviews filmed that day actually hurts things a bit too much because it’s really hard to feel something that binds these various people together.

Their reactions to the events along with the way they act and talk is poignant at the very start of this film, but things feel far too repetitious along the way since most of the interviews are quite similar in rage and tone.

The fact tat this film lacks a narrator and something to connect al of these random people is quite detrimental to things.

The anonymity of it all says so much about the views and perspective of the ‘man on the street’ and is on paper a great idea.

Unfortunately tho, something constantly feels missing as things progress that takes so much away from the way one takes in this story.

Bottom Line – Great idea that falls completely short because it is just a random group of interviews of people watching the events of that fateful day. The reactions and actions of these onlookers is quite poignant at the start of the film, but as things move along, it’s easy to see how repetitious this all is. The film lacks a real narration which would help bind things together and the lack of that bond really hurts things a lot here. The anonymity of it all is great, but something constantly feels missing as this film moves along.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Every attempt has been made to contact the subjects interviewed in this documentary. (From IMDB)
