The Ice Harvest (2005)

“He actually threatened to shoot Gladys if I didn’t tell him where the money was. But I think he was counting on a level of commitment and affection between her and me that just simply wasn’t there.” – Vic

Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Nov 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A mob lawyer and a strip club owner team up for a daring heist on Christmas Eve that helps prove to them both that no one is ever to be trusted.

My Take on it – This is a film that I knew nothing about when it was recommended to me to heck it out

The film’s cast is superb with John Cusack, Bily Bob Thornton, Connie Nielsen and Oliver Platt.

Platt is hilarious in his role and steals every scene he appears in.

Cusack is perfectly cast in the lead despite the fact that it is so very different from the kind of roles he usually takes.

The story is helped together really well and works on numerous levels.

The plot is both engaging and enjoyable as it flows by so smoothly.

They do a wonderful job throwing in some really fun and unexpected twists and turns along the way which raises the suspense and tension level as things progress.

The fact that none of the characters are likeable makes things more challenging, but also makes it easier to root for nobody instead of one of the main characters.

The film has some modern ‘covers’ of some very classic Christmas songs which help cast the mood of things while also establishing the modernity of it all.

Harold Ramis is perfect here as director because of the way that he is able to bring all of the elements in this story together and does so in some really fun and enjoyable ways

Bottom Line – Really fun heist film that works on so many levels. Cusack is superb in the lead because he really plays a character very different from the kinds he usually plays. The rest of the cast is superb and help keep things so engaging and enjoyable to watch unfold. Platt is hilarious in this film and is able to steal every scene he appears in. The plot has some great twists and turns that help raise the suspense level of things even though none of the characters are very likeable. The modern versions of Christmas songs used on the soundtrack help add to the holiday atmosphere but also enhance the story itself because of the modern feel of it all. Ramis does a wonderful job directing this film and helping it all come together in such a fun and enjoyable way. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Harold Ramis offered a role to Bill Murray but Murray did not return his calls. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
